Arguably the most inflammatory member in Congress, GOP Rep. Allen West (FL) outdid himself yesterday by comparing the Democratic Party to the Nazi party. Bristling at a new poll revealing that Americans blame Republicans for Congress’s inability to function, West invoked this slur:
“If Joseph Goebbels was around, he’d be very proud of the Democrat Party, because they have an incredible propaganda machine,” West told reporters during House votes Thursday afternoon. “Let’s be honest, you know, some of the people in the media are complicit with this and enabling them to get that type of message out.” [...]

Of course this pea brain Republicon is too stupid to know that there is no such thing as "the Democrat Party" not to mention the fact that his own party is much closer to the ideals of the Nazi party.

there is no such thing as "the Democrat Party"

Reagan began it. All good republicans repeat it like the lemmings they are.

Using the noun form (Democrat party) in place of the correct adjectival form of the word Democratic party) demonstrates the GOP's willingness to embrace ignorance rather than take the chance that Americans will associate the party name with the process.

This particular brainless jar head probably doesn't even know how stupid it makes him look when he willfully engages in bad grammar.

His need to evoke Nazism in this feeble name calling attempt further illustrates the intellectual void from which he tries to express himself.

If ole Joe would be proud of the Democrats, he'd be absolutely estatic with the Republicans. I gotta admit the Repubs take the cake when it comes to propaganda, especially their fake "farting points". They out-do everyone in history including the Nazis, Stalin, the Chi-coms and even North Korea. They are absolute masters of lying.

Sure - and this is all part of the script. The GOP deliberately projects their own guilt onto the opposition, and the incredible Republican propaganda machine delivers the message over, and over. Meanwhile, their thought-free constituency eats it up without a shred of doubt.

Yes, Goebbels certainly would be proud - of the GOP.

Conservative, freedom hating, anti-liberty, pro business and government combined, anti-liberal, anti-Christ, anti choice. Yep sounds like a Fascist to me !!!

Fascists hate liberals because liberals are pro choice and Fascists are not. Fascists hate freedom for all because freedom for all entails the rights of all people being considered.

Hmmm ??? So far it sounds like the Republican Party who are the Fascists.

"... his own party is much closer to the ideals of the Nazi party..."

The Republicon party? Do you mean the Republican Party?

Actually the German National Socialist Party borrowed many of the ideas from the American progressives of the early twentieth century. Since the Progressives have come out of the closet in the last few decades and have aligned their selves to the DNC. The old German Nazi party would logically be closer to the DNC.

The Republicon party? Do you mean the Republican Party?

No I mean the Republicon party. If the right chooses to rename the Democratic Party then I am more than happy to return the favor. Since Mr. West the subject of this article, has chosen to use the term Democrat party, I will refer to his party as Republicons throughout this seed. When I am dealing with reasonable people who happen to be Republicans in other seeds then I will revert to that name. As to the matter of Mr. West my advice (to Republicons) would be, if you don't like getting fleas then don't lie down with dogs.

The old German Nazi party would logically be closer to the DNC.

Since the old German Nazi party was to the right and the Progressive movement was to the left it is hardly logical that the Nazi party was more closely aligned with the Progressive movement or party. The fact that Republicons love to attempt to rewrite history as well as reality is clearly demonstrated by this absurd assertion.

Teddy Roosevelt was perhaps the most well known of the early progressives. Do you really want to go on record associating him with the birth of the Nazi Party?

The old German Nazi party would logically be closer to the DNC.

Since you believe that the Democrats are closer to the NSDAP ideology, do you believe that mass extermination is the next logical step for the DNC? Perhaps world domination? Blitzkriegs? Seems to me that Herr West sounds more and more like HE would be willing to kill people of differing viewpoints from him than any democrat or moderate or independent would. I for one would help anyone who needed help and without ideological judgement of them. I get the impression from ideologues like him that he would help someone ONLY after knowing what that person's politics is. And possibly even what their faith is, or if they have any faith at all.

your lack of knowledge on fascism is quite evident...of course left wing scholars are going to say it was right wing...but the truth is...it is a combination politic.

the right wing is limited government...from the mild which are republicans...to more extreme which are libertarians to the most extreme which is anarchy.

FASCISM REQUIRES A LARGE ALL POWERFUL CENTRAL GOVERNMENT.

now take the left wing.. promotes LARGE central governments......ie mild...democrats....more severe communist.

Dog Blue is right.

if people would truly think for themselves instead of listening to left wing scholars they could with intelligent reasoning see that it is more left wing than right....

it does draw the nationalism from the right.....however.....and therefore is like i said...

a combination politic.

FASCISM REQUIRES A LARGE ALL POWERFUL CENTRAL GOVERNMENT.

You give that as a definition about how democrats are fascist? Under that example all the governments of the world are fascist, exempting Somalia

Fascism promotes political violence and war as actions that create national regeneration, spirit and vitality. It views violence as a fact of life that is a necessary means to achieve human progress. It exalts militarism as providing positive transformation in society and providing spiritual renovation, education, instilling of a will to dominate in people's character and creating national comradeship through military service.

wtf are you talking about??

somalia?? somalia is anarchy

and no not every government in the world is fascist...but nearly so in my opinion. freedom is non existent.....morals are forced on us....we do not have choice in our lives...corporations rule as they are in bed with government.....regulations preventing people from getting out of poverty.....laws which regulate moralilty and imprison millions.

we have 5% of the worlds population but 25% of the worlds prison population....not really a statistic for a free country now is it?

besides....this is not democrat or republican...as there really is no republican party anymore...just a lite verson of the big government.

how much did government grow under bush?? and how much does it grow under obama?? how much does it grow under democrat congress?? republican congress>???

the constant is the government is expanding power and individual rights are decreasing.....

smile....you dont have liberty......but you can continue to think you do. and that is the big trick.

peace

oh and there is no set definition to fascism....I can give you a definition that sounds much like our government right now.

For perhaps many a person will ask himself the question, why are we fighting at such great distances? We are fighting at such great distances in order to protect our homeland, in order to keep the war as far removed from us as possible and to spare us from what would otherwise be its fate, Adolf Hitler November 8, 1942 in Munich

I think that because he is black and is now a congressman that he can say anything and everybody else must listen and learn from him or else he will go to the podium and cry RACIAL DISCRIMINATION. Don't look now, but another irrational, ridiculus, backward, quote from yet another GOP crony whose primary attribute and earning skill is he is simply a deliberately offensive human being, so much so he probably smells, chews with his mouth open, etc.

This as opposed to GOP/TP'ers who sit idly and soak up three-four hours of Limbaugh a day and repeat his nonsense like Mynah birds. That is much more the Goebbels way. THrow in a little Fox News and you get the continual indoctrination of the idea that the favored are to blame for nothing and that others are defective and responsible for all that is bad in the world. In effect it is little more than brainwashing and Goebbels was hardly the first practitioner.

hey allen!! joseph goebbels was the spokesman for a far right fascist party who espoused theories closer to those that the rightwing conservatives in america are saying.

it it terribly ironic that a person who would have been labeled a subhuman, sent to the death camps, or enslaved by the rightwing nazi party is trying to link that party to a party that while not close to perfect has been far more inclusive of the needs and desires of it's african american membership and nation's population than the party he has chosen to align himself with.

allen is the democratic party engaging in voter caging? voter suppression? electing rightwing judges who are anti civil rights? profiling hispanic citizens? engaging in open racism against new targets, the muslim community along with the standard racism against african americans, other minorities, working class caucasians and everybody not a member of the 1%

are the koch brothers who financially sponsored a racist segregationist school board slate in north carolina liberals or democrats.

Creepy Allen West is one of the reasons people blame the Republicans for the failure of Congress.

Instead of taking responsibility for being part of the low Republican approval ratings, I guess he thinks if he can resort to idiotic insults, all of a sudden the Republicans will be the best thing since sliced bread.

Sorry creepy West- your stupid insults only reaffirm what most of the country already knows. Republicans in congress suck.

Creepy West and his delusional nonsense are an embarressment to all the decent Republicans in this country.

It's not like any Dumocrap has ever said:

- the tea partiers were wearing swastikas
- the Giffords shooter was motivated by inflammatory right wing speech (BTW, how'd that work out for ya?)
- the GOP wants dirtier air, dirtier water and less healthcare
- the GOP budget will kill 70,000 children
- the GOP wants to push grandma off the cliff
(need I go on?)

or anything.

See, the difference is that those things are correct and what "Rep." West said wasn't. The GOP fights tooth, nail and claw to reduce environmental protections. The GOP fights tooth, nail and claw to cut any and all support for the poor. The GOP fights tooth, nail and claw against any attempt to extend healthcare rights to poorer people (even when it's with the support of the "free-market" they claim to love so much.

Son, I'm sorry -- but what exactly DO you expect people to think when a group behaves in such a fashion?

Few Americans actually have any understanding at all about socialism as an economic system. Our kids are not allowed to learn about it in school, and about the only time the word arises in our language is when it is used disparagingly on Talk Radio, Corporate Media, and repeated by well-conditioned citizens like yourself.

It is amusing to hear anyone criticize socialism when they try to extol the "virtues" of capitalism, which is a modern system of owners and citizen wage-slaves.

Cas , when nazis use the word socialism it a misnomer, their is no real democratic social democratic principals applied, it is a race based nationalism, hatred of the other(the minority/the gyspsy. the Jew/the muslim) intolerance of intellectuals, arts and Multiculturalism, belligerent chauvinism and militarism. Who does that sound like? Hint...its not Democrats.

North korea is neither a democracy nor a republic, but that doesn't stop them from calling themselves the democratic republic of korea.

Now something cons are loathe to think about, is of the Nazi Movement, the silver shirts, the purest form of Fascism to hit America that idolized Hitler, and wore uniforms like those of the Brownshirts They were the silver legion. They were conservative. They were Christian;

On January 30, 1933, Adolf Hitler was appointed Chancellor of Germany.William Dudley Pelley, an admirer of Hitler, was inspired to found the Silver Legion, an extremist and antisemitic organization whose followers (known as the Silver Shirts and "Christian Patriots") wore Nazi-like silver uniforms. The Silver Legion's emblem was a scarlet L, which was featured on their flags and uniforms. Pelley founded chapters of the Silver Legion in almost every state in the country, and soon gained a considerable number of followers.[7]

Pelley traveled throughout the United States and holding mass rallies, lectures, and public speeches in order to attract Americans to his organization. Pelley's political ideology consisted of anti-Communism, antisemitism, racism, extreme patriotism, isolationism, pyramidology and British Israelism[8] , themes which were the primary focus of his numerous magazines and newspapers, which included Liberation, Pelley's Silvershirt Weekly, The Galilean, and The New Liberator

The first thing Hitler did when he was made Chancellor for Life was to abolish the the Democratic Socialist.

Americanism i.e. American Democracy, is socialism, Marx wasn’t born until 1818, this quote is from 1811.

"The happiness and prosperity of our citizens... is the only legitimate object of government and the first duty of governors...Our revenues liberated by the discharge of the public debt, and its surplus applied to canals, roads, schools, etc., the farmer will see his government supported, his children educated, and the face of his country made a paradise by the contributions of the rich alone, without his being called on to spend a cent from his earnings." --Thomas Jefferson to Thaddeus Kosciusko, 1811.

I’m German.

Do you want to have this argument with me that Hitler was a left leaning socialist?

Bring it!

Germany has the oldest universial healthcare system in Europe, I thought the Socialist Hitler lost?.

If you go to Germany and tell someone that Hitler was a socialist, maybe you won’t get punched in the face, but I doubt it.

"An hereditary aristocracy... will change the form of our governments from the best to the worst in the world. To know the mass of evil which flows from this fatal source, a person must be in France; [note the date is just before the French Revolution of 1791, when it was still a small government Monarchy.] he must see the finest soil, the finest climate, the most compact State,(small government) the most benevolent character of people,(They are the blessed) and every earthly advantage combined, insufficient to prevent this scourge from rendering existence a curse to twenty-four out of twenty-five parts of the inhabitants of this country." --Thomas Jefferson to George Washington, 1786

" I hope we shall crush in its birth the aristocracy of our moneyed corporations which dare already to challenge our government to a trial of strength and bid defiance to the laws of our country. "

The Nazis were "in no way socialist" in the same way that Stalinist Russia was "in no way fascist".

There is a case to be made in certain regards. And at the far extremes of left and right things start looking very similar.

If your quote "Socialism is sacrificing the individual to the whole" is what Goebbels believed, then I would contend that Goebblels was more in line with the right wing and Ayn Rand "every man for himself mentalities" that hates social programs eminating from government.

All extremes belong to the Right. Socialism predates Marx and is not “Left.”

There is not now, nor has there ever been a functioning Communist government, The Communist movement was taken over by the Far-Right, just as the always do in any popular movements, just as they did with the Tea Party. Just as they tried to do with the Fake Democrats running in the primary recall elections in Wisconsin.

Communist governments are ALL Far-Right small governments of the privileged wealthy elite subjugating the majority by force and intimidation.

Communist governments are ALL Far-Right small governments of the privileged wealthy elite subjugating the majority by force and intimidation.

Then they aren't really communist governments are they? :)

And I would argue that communism was practiced for a lot longer than capitalism in our history. But of course communism is not socialism, and it is just as difficult to find a truly capitalist government.

Socialism/communism arose as a reaction to a certain set of conditions (the fact that more and more people seemed to be leading miserable lives while somehow more and more wealth was being generated). It presented itself as a radical departure from the "status quo" and was by nature at odds with the predominant ideology in a way that capitalism never was. Capitalism never had to reckon with another prevailing ideology feeling threatened by it, trying to destroy it.

I agree that communism has never worked out on a large scale. (Yet!). But it is really hard for me to imagine any kind of an optimistic future under a capitalist system where, as we have seen pretty clearly, money (power) seems to be collecting more an more in the hands of fewer and fewer, without any real historically proven method of preventing that from happening. At least communism has a light at the end of the tunnel. We are pretty much living in the light at the end of the capitalist tunnel. Capitalism = materialism and consumerism. Is that really what we were put here for? To labour for half of our waking lives so that the precious "produce things to buy so that you have money to buy the things that are produced .. or all is doomed!" cycle stays running?

And just like the prevalence of organized religion doesn't prove it "right" (at least for me), or mean that "that's just they way humans have to be", the prevalence of capitalism doesn't prove it's superiority in my books. Then of course you have the strong link between communism and atheism. Both basically saying "ok .. we have these huge hierarchical power structures.. do we really need this, or are we just being sold on the idea that we need it by those with vested interests?"

As for the Nazis - you had the intent to destroy class boundaries and create a society based on individual merit and service to the state. You had nationalization of industry and planned economy. You had a barrage of social and welfare programs. I'm not going to argue that the Nazis were textbook socialists (or good guys!), but enough academic thought has been devoted to the notion that it shouldn't just be disregarded offhand.

Whoops. Someone put an extra shot of "rant" in my coffee!

BTW - I am currently living in former East Berlin and I work part-time as a guide at the concentration camp outside of town, so I get to talk about this stuff *a lot*.

Rather not

The Democrats, Republicans, and TP'ers seem awfully fond of labels and catch-phrases. Perhaps because they believe that the majority of voting Americans are too dumb to understand an intelligent discussion of our nation's issues. Sadly, that approach may result in a self-fulfilling prophecy.

As Dylan said, "Don't follow leaders. Watch the parking meters." People need to stop blindly accepting the crap that spews forth from the oral cavity of their favorite politician, blogger, columnist, etc., and instead gather as many facts and opinions as they can (and know which are which) and reach their own conclusions. That is, people must stop being sheep.

It's not like any Dumocrap has ever said:

I’m so sick of this… Saying that people should stop being sheep is as likely to happen as telling sheep to stop being sheep will!

"Men by their constitutions are naturally divided into two parties: 1. Those who fear and distrust the people, and wish to draw all powers from them into the hands of the higher classes. 2. Those who identify themselves with the people, have confidence in them, cherish and consider them as the most honest and safe, although not the most wise depositary of the public interests. In every country these two parties exist, and in every one where they are free to think, speak, and write, they will declare themselves. Call them, therefore, Liberals and Serviles, Jacobins and Ultras, Whigs and Tories, Republicans and Federalists, Aristocrats and Democrats, or by whatever name you please, they are the same parties still and pursue the same object. The last one of Aristocrats and Democrats is the true one expressing the essence of all." -- Thomas Jefferson to Henry Lee, 1824.

Calling Democrats Socialists is a convenient deflection but what has Allen West's party done for the working class is the real question. Who does he and his policies really benefit is the real question. So he can call all the names he likes but what has he actually fought for that benefited the working class is what matters. Rant is cheap, actions matter.
