A new report from the World Health Organization (WHO) classifies cell phones as a possible carcinogen in the same category as lead, engine exhaust and chloroform.

A team of 31 scientists from 14 countries in the International Agency for Research on Cancer, the cancer arm of the World Health Organization, made the determination that cell phone exposure was "possibly carcinogenic to humans." The team, which included scientists from the U.S., reached their conclusion after reviewing dozens of studies.

I'm not at all surprised to see this report . Earlier work on the 1st generation phones showed some significant problems but apparently even the later generation ones cause problems [although the report did not mention that] .

Maybe tin foil hats aren't such a bad idea.

That might work . It would form a Faraday cage around your head .

But using a phone in loud speaker mode is even easier . That way the phone stays a few inches away from your head .

This should come as no surprise, as Big Business has never had a conscience about selling products that were even potentially dangerous. As late as the '50s the were doctor-approved cigarettes, soft drink companies swore up and down there were no health issues with cyclamates, it took the Russians to present evidence that Red dye #2 was harmful, and we are told to cook some meats "thoroughly" as they could contain a legally unrestricted amount of contamination.

It comes down to money, and there are big bucks in cell phones and annual contracts. So what if there is a risk of cancer?

With any luck, it'll get people to stay off the phone while driving.
