PEKIN, Ill. – For days before he died in a federal prison, Adam Montoya pleaded with guards to be taken to a doctor, pressing a panic button in his cell over and over to summon help that never came.
An autopsy concluded that the 36-year-old inmate suffered from no fewer than three serious illnesses — cancer, hepatitis and HIV. The cancer ultimately killed him, causing his spleen to burst. Montoya bled to death internally.
But the coroner and a pathologist were more stunned by another finding: The only medication in his system was a trace of over-the-counter pain reliever.

Most people would not let a dog suffer like this without medical treatment.

Some people care what happens to dogs. Prisoners aren't given that much consideration.

I would like for you to pay attention to something. The next time you hear some mention of a person going to prison on a morning radio talk show or something similar pay attention to the humor surrounding it. It will be rape humor.

Somehow male on male anal rape is not only acceptable if it happens in the context of prison but it's a source of amusement. No one made jokes about Vick's dogs 'asking for it' because they lost fights. No one makes jokes about puppy mill operators 'saving money by only putting paper under the dog in the bottom cage.' That would raise a hue and cry that would result in the morning DJ's being fired. But prisoners being anally raped, hey, that's just good clean entertainment.

I made that point to make this one, we aren't just putting people in prison, we're inculcating attitudes of hatred, lack of human dignity and hopelessness in a huge part of the population after we lock them up. Then we're shocked at how they behave when they get out.

Some very good points wheel. Somehow female prisoners being raped is far less funny.

Exactly! It says something sinister about us as a nation that we would tolerate and even enable this kind of thing.

That said, if the prisoner is a female notice the jokes will be 'shower room' humor. As though male gay sex must be forced but female gay sex will be spontaneous. That says something about us too.

Howard Stern may just be the epitome of American Mores. </ sarc >

Somebody once said to look at the prison population of any nation to see what it's society is like (heavily paraphrased), I think he's right. The prison system in many ways reflects how we as a society are becoming less and less concerned with the plight of our fellow man. We rather make excuses than trying to solve our problems!

When society puts someone in prison, it assumes responsibility for that person's safety. What happens with this case needs to be followed closely so it isn't allowed to slip through the cracks. If, indeed, he was denied medical treatment despite repeated attempts to obtain it, it's likely someone was criminally liable. It may be a callous guard. Let's hope it is not worse: a pattern of contempt for safety by the prison administration.
