Low Levels Of Vitamin D Rises to Epidemic Proportions

There's an epidemic in progress, and it has nothing to do with the flu. A ground-breaking study published in the March 2010 Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism found an astonishing 59 per cent of study subjects had too little Vitamin D in their blood. Nearly a quarter of the group had serious deficiencies (less than 20 ng/ml) of this important vitamin. Since Vitamin D insufficiency is linked to increased body fat, decreased muscle strength and a range of disorders, this is a serious health issue.

Wow, what a coincidence. I just got a letter from my transplant coordinator that told me my latest clinic labs show a vitamin D problem with a prescription and a lab order for next month. I have been unemployed for a year now and was also told to get off my ass and get some exercise as I also put on twenty pounds. I was planning on reading up on this and I saw this article. Thanks.

So they still don't know the cause. It's not like being obese causes low vitamin D levels.

Actually I believe being obese among other things causes vitamin D to be depleted...

That's what I thought too when I read your seed's title. Guess we'll have to wait for actual support.

Maybe there's a correlation between being obese and not getting off of the couch and outside into the sunlight?

Smart thinking, TestAnxiety. Could perhaps be one of the explanations.

My first thought when I read the seed's title was the same as Test's.

My brother has a vitamin D dificiency that he has a prescription vitamin for, but he has the deficiency because he doesn't get up off his butt and do anything outdoors. He likes to sit in the basement playing games or watching TV. He's also overweight. There's a common factor there.

I don't disagree that there is a connection. We know that lack of vitamin D inhibits calcium absorption among other things so I think we can agree that it is important to get enough of it, one way or the other.
