NEW YORK (AP) -- One trip for their Jack Russell terrier in a plane's cargo hold was enough to convince Alysa Binder and Dan Wiesel that owners needed a better option to get their pets from one city to another.

On Tuesday, the first flight for the husband-and-wife team's Pet Airways, the first-ever all-pet airline, took off from Republic Airport in Farmingdale, N.Y.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

An elegant solution for a very old problem. I wish them every success.

Totally agree. I have a teeny dog (the kind that fits in a crate under a seat), but if she were larger and we needed to travel, I'd absolutely use that airline. I hope that find major success!

Thanks for you comment Thia. I am surprised this story has not gotten more traction considering how many pet owners travel and face this dilemma.

Just a thought but perhaps they could allow people in the coach section. Many folks who have been treated like cattle by the regular airlines would not have a problem with that.

If I could travel with my dog, I would definitely use the pet airline. I don't kennel her and would feel much more secure about being able to fly on the same plane (and within visual range).

Do you think the all pet airline will succeed? I think in this current economic time, it's going to be tough. Had they done this 2 years ago, it would have taken off much more quickly. At least I think so.

I think there is a demand for this kind of service. Whether a pet only would work I don't know. Mixing it with some passengers and freight would certainly improve their odds I would think.
