Disillusioned Democrats Turn on Obama as Compromiser

advertisement

For environmental activists like Jessica Miller, 31, the passage of a major climate bill by the House last month should have been cause for euphoria. Instead she felt cheated.

Ms. Miller, an activist with Greenpeace, had worked hard on her own time to elect Barack Obama because he directly and urgently addressed the issue nearest her heart: climate change.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

With the Republican party in disarray and beset by one scandal after another and with the Democrats firmly in control of the White House, the Senate and the House you would think that some progressive laws and some real progress on a multitude of social, economic and environmental issues would be made but sadly that is not the case. By making key parts of the Democratic platform palatable to Republicans he is doing great harm to the Democratic party as well as the country. The Republican agenda is part of the problem not the solution.

To have a social agenda, you need social values and social ideologies, that do not depend on class, corporate corruption, corporate lobbyist, that is its oposite, class parties, class ideologies. Obama may be the new face of Corporate despotism, corporate fascism, and Empire that no longer was possible with White, conservative class thugs. This makes Obama's constant betrayals even more sinister, as it has become clear that the class elites picked out class compromisers, deformers, betrayers, which also explains why the Corporate media ignored Kucinich, as the Presidential candidate, and constructed the false debates between Hillary and Obama, who clearly are the equal opportunity class whores for a Criminal rogue state.

Every politcian, in order to get elected, has to cow tow to large donors, one way or the other. Some think that they can ignore those donors once they get elected, as they think that they are smarter than said donors. Donors want something, they didnt give the money away because the candidate looks nice ( well maybe some do)

You cant beat the system, its inherent in our political process. Complaining about it, being "shocked" about it doesnt change a thing. Used to be more open back in the old days, now we have PACs and interest groups who take up the slack. We should all know this happens and work within that system for better or worse, because despite all of your wishes it aint gonna change no matter who is in the White House. And being the complete cynic, when voters are working and buying cars and houses they dont really care. You build a better lock a theif will come up with a better lock pick. And dont tell me this doesnt happen in Europe which is a bit socialist. MPs were being bribed and influenced in England before, during, and after their Socialist agenda. And knowing you you will tell me that England wasnt Socialist under Wilson, believe me compared to the U.S. they were waaaay closer. Every company of almost any size had the name British in front of it since they had been nationalized after 1947.

Lampell:

Generic class corruption, class criminality is now so deep into the 3 branches of government, four, if you count the corrupt corporate media, that the constant delusional excuses from both conservatives and liberal, class aplogists has now produced a criminal oligarchy, Kleptocracy, in which the two party apologists are enabling a rogue Empire and rogue class/imperial alliances, that put us on the path towards either implosion from our own corruption, criminality, or a globalized response to Corporate fascism and American Empire. The stench is everywhere and Glenn Greenwald notes that these class elties are now using class trickery, appearances to make it appear that they are cleaning house when in fact they are enabling massive criminality in the INJUSTICE DEPARTMENT, with the help of the corrupt corporate news, NEWSEEK to cover up massive crimes.

I suspect this new form of diversion, is to keep eveyone from looking at the most recent explosive story on Cheney's personal death squad, assassination squad, now protected by OBSTRUCTIONISTS, CONSTITUTIONAL LAW BREAKERS, inside the Obama administration:

With stories like these, it is time to consider the whole of all four branches of government, legislative, judicial, executive and corporate propaganda arm, the corporate media, as a criminal oligarchy, Kleptocracy, and in need of a major political revolution, to clean the clock out of these class politicians, from class parties, and their class ideologies, by throwing out both democrats and republicans for their BI PARTISAN COVERUP AND BIPARTISAN CRIMINALITY.

Here is where we disagree, for some reason you are stating these facts as if something is new. It has been going on since the country started. My mother used to tell me how the CIA experimented with people using LSD and LSB to gain expertise in the area of truth drugs. My grandmother actually was part of the experiment where they gave her free drugs that she thought would cure her migraines. I have read dozens of books on the CIA concerning our hidden government. If you want to go back in history, how about the Spanish Amerian War and yellow journalism, where we went to war on the pretense of the sinking of the Maine, which sank because of a boiler explosion due to leaking vapors. How about the Mexican War of 1844 so the Americans could acquire huge amounts of land from them, including California. How about Andrew Jackson, that great democrat who allowed the Indians to be moved from the Southeast over across the Mississippi. I could go on and on, you see where I am coming from here. Absolutely nothing new.

I think the Democrats were hoping for a strong-armed President to push an agenda, but I don't think they were looking very clearly at Obama. He certainly could with the strength of the House and Senate, but from the start of his campaign he's talked about how important it is to listen to the other side and concede when they have a point. He's always been a compromiser, because he's a diplomatic person. I voted for him knowing that.

Now that said, this isn't a bad strategy. Pushing agendas hard would serve to galvanize Republicans against him and may chase him out in 2012. An even more imminent threat is 2010, when the face of Congress may change. The more of a hard-line stance he adopts on issues, the more likely a Republican Congress - or at least a Congress with a few more Republicans in it - would be unwilling to work with him on anything.

Can we imagine Obama (not to speak of the warlike neocons, the hawkish Democrats and the spineless media) remaining silent?

Well, this is exactly what happened when Israel not Iran acted in this manner just last week.

Governments of other countries with detained nationals spoke out, complained, and tried to put pressure onIsrael, such as Ireland and England, but not a peep from the U.S.!"

I disagree luckydog, Obama seems to be doing a great job of being pragmatic and progressive. Compromise is what successful politics (and marriage, in my experience) is all about. Sure the honeymoon is over and all those with sky high expectations are sure to be disappointed but I think he is enacting a bold and audacious series of policy initiatives which have the potential to transform this nation into a more open and fair society. It won't happen nearly as quickly as I would like but considering the alternative leaders and there agendas I still think Obama is the best person for the job, he ain't perfect but...... Be patient my friends, Yes We Can!

With all the rhetoric of we won you lost, perhaps people should look at who really voted for this President. Yes traditional dems voted for him that is to be expected. But with a huge amounts of independnts out there they are the ones who swung the election. Thats how elections are won. He has to compromise, its not even vs Republicans it also differerent views within the Democrats, some of whom were elected in traditionally red states.

And yet as a Saturday NYT piece makes clear — "Disillusioned Environmentalists Turn on Obama as Compromiser" — youth would appear to have misdirected their anger toward true environmental leaders like Obama, Waxman, and Markey.

Worse, part of the "youth" movement — specifically the website "It's Getting Hot in Here" and by extension the "Energy Action Coalition," which features that blog prominently on its website — has been partly co-opted by people who are in fact anti-environmental, people who have repeatedly smeared environmental champions with false accusations, people who have consistently proposed infinitely weaker climate action than Waxman-Markey.

Fortunately, we aren't in that helpless and hopeless place quite yet. The bulk of the environmental and progressive communities understand that, for all its flaws,

  1. Waxman-Markey would complete the transition to a clean energy economy begun in the stimulus bill.
  2. It's failure would not lead to stronger climate action anytime soon — quite the reverse, it would all but doom any prospect of national and, equally important, international action for the foreseeable future, precisely the time-frame in which strong action must begin if our youth are not going to be left with a ruined climate (see here).

The bill was undoubtedly too weak, but politics is the art of the possible. Obama only has so much political capital, and he can't spend it all in one place. Unfortunately, the legacy of Republican rule has left us with so many problems that stuff is going to get spread thin. What do these people think, that McCain would have been the second coming of John Muir? Sometimes you just have to take what you can get.

Excuses, excuses, excuses, the sand time clock, is almost out of sand. And then the Republican fascists will come in with greater class despotism, tyranny, by pointing out that Obama and the democrats were too busy promoting class whoring, which served the class thugs, and fascists for further class dictatorship, not social reform. Social paralysis, caused by class corruption, class appeasement by liberals, allows the fasicsts to come in through the back door. The Weimar social democratic regime, before the Nazi regime, too, corrupted, appeased nationalism, imperialism, and Corporate financing of Nazi shock troops. It resulted in the displacement of false oppositions parties by real class thugs, who defended class tyranny, unlike the whoring social democratic party.

And the extreme left, socialist will hope that Obama fails so that they can be the saviours and show us the light while ironically shutting down the factories that provide lightbulbs:) Firewood shall be the new source of light, except the environmnetalists wont let us cut wood from trees, but everyone will be equal, clothing will be made by hand, with worker co op farms springing throughout the land with the new farmers singing Halaluyah. Lampell:

You are describing subordinated, isolated impoverished regimes, whether post colonial or bureaucratic despotism. Sharing poverty is a sure sign that these regimes are the products of class forces, global capitalist subordination, replicating the same hierarchies, deformed middle layers, that occurs within class regimes, that occurs in these post colonial regimes. The "extreme" deformation by Stalinists, post colonial regimes are shadow creations of Global class relations, not "Communism" but class forces deforming into multiple forms of deformed hierarchies.

Real social change, which can only mean international social change, means an end to both class and bureacuratic deformed regimes, created by globalized Capitalism, and an end to class history.

If it was possible for a country to start from scratch with no classes it would not be long before someone became the "ruling" class. Someone who "knows" what is good for his fellow man.
